How to challenge your TikTok LIVE Restriction?

You start a LIVE on TikTok and 2 minutes in, your access is restricted or removed — possibly without clear explanation. Whether you use LIVE to connect with your community, generate income through gifts and diamonds, or build your professional presence, losing this feature can have a real and immediate impact.

There are several ways to challenge a LIVE restriction, including filing an appeal directly with TikTok or taking legal action in court. Since the introduction of the European Digital Services Act (DSA), you now have an additional option: you can contact a certified out-of-court dispute resolution body such as User Rights. Through this procedure, you can quickly, easily, and free of charge have your case reviewed to determine whether the restriction was justified — including an assessment by our independent legal experts.

Not all TikTok LIVE restrictions are the same. The following types of LIVE access restriction can be challenged through User Rights:

  • Temporary LIVE suspension: Your access to go live is suspended for a defined period following a presumed violation during a broadcast or in your wider account history. Access typically restores automatically once the suspension period ends, but you can still challenge the decision.
  • Permanent LIVE suspension: Your LIVE access is fully and indefinitely removed following presumed serious or repeated violations. Reversing this requires an active appeal process.
  • LIVE feature restrictions: Specific LIVE features are limited rather than removed entirely. For example, restrictions on receiving virtual gifts, co-hosting with other users, or hosting LIVE Events.

Find Out Why Your LIVE Access Was Restricted

When TikTok restricts your LIVE access, you will typically receive a notification via the app or by email. This notification is your starting point.

Via the TikTok app LIVE Center: The most reliable place to find information about your LIVE restriction is the LIVE Center, TikTok's dedicated hub for creators who go live.

To access it:

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap the + button at the bottom of the screen (as if you were going to go live).
  2. Select LIVE from the options.
  3. If your access is restricted, you will see a notice explaining the restriction. Tap it for more details.

Via Creator tools:

  1. Go to your Profile page.
  2. Tap the three-line menu (☰) in the top right corner.
  3. Select Creator tools.
  4. Tap LIVE Center.

Via email: TikTok also sends notifications to the email address linked to your account. Check your inbox and spam folder for a message explaining the restriction.

Note: TikTok applies a strikes system for LIVE violations, separate from its general content strikes. Strikes related to LIVE behaviour accumulate over repeated violations and may expire after a set period. A permanent LIVE suspension is typically triggered by serious or repeated presumed violations during broadcasts.

Identify the Policy Cited

In the restriction notification, under Restriction details, TikTok should indicate which Community Guideline or LIVE policy was violated. Common reasons for LIVE restrictions include:

  • Hate speech or hateful behaviour during a broadcast
  • Harassment or bullying of viewers or guests during a LIVE session
  • Violent, graphic, or dangerous content streamed live
  • Sexual or nudity-related content
  • Promotion of dangerous activities or substances
  • Soliciting or facilitating prohibited transactions during LIVE

Note: If no specific policy is named and TikTok only states a general presumed violation, we can still review your case. Simply note this in our online form.

Check Whether User Rights Can Review Your Case

If you know the reason for the restriction, you can check whether your case falls within User Rights' scope of certification.

We cannot review your case if the restriction is based on:

  • Behaviour unrelated to content — for example, age-related eligibility requirements (TikTok requires users to be at least 18 to go live), follower count thresholds, or account-wide bans for circumventing a previous suspension via a new account
  • Content involving the sexual abuse or exploitation of children

If any of the above reasons are mentioned in the platform's notification or previous strikes, we are unfortunately unable to accept your case, even if you disagree with their assessment.

2. Secure Evidence

To submit your case through our free procedure, you must provide certain information and evidence via our online form. In particular, we need screenshots of the restriction notification. Without the required evidence*, it might take longer to review your case.

Important: We can only process your case if the LIVE restriction occurred within the last six months.

3. Explain Why You Disagree and Submit Your Case

After uploading all required evidence via our online form, you can explain your situation in more detail. In a text field, you can describe why you disagree with TikTok's decision and what impact the LIVE restriction has had on you — personally, professionally, or financially. If you noticed a pattern of repeated LIVE restrictions, we recommend mentioning it.

The more context and detail you provide, the better our dispute resolution experts can assess and process your case. 

Important: One content moderation action per form submission. If TikTok has taken multiple actions against you — for example, a LIVE suspension and a separate post removal — you must submit a separate complaint for each individual action. We review each platform decision separately and cannot process combined procedures.

4. Check Your Emails Regularly

Throughout the entire procedure, we will keep you informed by email. If we require additional information or further evidence, we will contact you directly.

What Happens After I Submit My Case?

After you submit via our online form, we review your information and forward it to TikTok. The platform is then given the opportunity to respond and further explain its decision. In some cases, TikTok already lifts the restriction at this stage.

TikTok typically has 7 days to respond, with a possible extension of up to 14 days.

User Rights then examines whether TikTok's Community Guidelines justify the LIVE restriction in the specific case and whether the decision was lawful. We also consider the requirements of the Digital Services Act: your fundamental rights as well as the platform's rights. Even if the guidelines generally permit a restriction, User Rights may recommend restoring your LIVE access if the decision is incompatible with your European fundamental rights.

Our procedure is completely free of charge. Our decisions are not binding in the same way as court judgments. However, TikTok is required to cooperate with certified dispute resolution bodies such as User Rights.

We are required to issue a decision within a maximum of 90 days. In highly complex cases, processing may take up to 180 days. As soon as new information becomes available, we will inform you immediately.
